We use a closed group for internal purposes and like to see these items on our Dashboard, of course group (all Author) members only.

As long as you are a member of that closed group, anyone posting any updates on the group would be visible on your dashboard. If you are not part of the group, you will not be able to view it, http://take.ms/7KvSP
Do take note that if a group member isn't your friend, you need to filter the streams on the dashboard by Everyone.
