I'm not sure what do you mean by controlling the sidebar. Anyway, there is no issue turning off the widgets on your profile sidebar. Check out the attached screenshot.

Perhaps, you can explain more so we can understand your issue better.

Where did you turn that off, when I tried nothing worked. I still see the widgets now

Yeah, I've turned on it back. To edit any widget, you'll need to configure it through the EasySocial app. For example, the marketplace widget, navigate to EasySocial > Applications > (filter by user) > (search marketplace). You'll be able to configure the widget options from the app setting as shown in the attached screenshot.
