Clicking the icon to publish / unpublish an comment in the back end has no effect. This should work, no?

I'm so sorry for the late reply as here is a weekend for us. Seems like it is a bug from our side. We will fix this in the next release. For the time being, you can use the Publish button at the top of the page. http://screencast.com/t/dh3ge7H8qB .

Thanks for confirming that it's a bug. I was aware that I can use the button at the top but was bewildered as to why I couldn't hit that publish icon as in Joomla.
