I have a business site with one general forum.

Can I also set up two other forums with limited access to members only:
• ie Photo Forum... would include < 30 members
• ie Travel Forum... would include < 50 members

I would need to host them on the same site as my general forum, but limit access to each of the last two forums to only select, and different, members.
Hey there,

I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is a weekend for us here.

Yes, it is possible to do this, but you need to separate the categories which difference like photo and travel.

Then configure the category whoever can access these categories discussion on the site.

So you probably need to create 2 new user group e.g. photo and travel.

Whoever registered user under photo user group, then all these user only can access photo category discussion.

Hope this will help.

Hi Arlex... thanks for your reply. It actually took me awhile to find the forum again! Bit of a puzzle, but here I am!

That’s good news about being able to l8mot a category to a specific group. I have a few more questions of that is ok?

I went through both my setup and the demo and I think I have this correct but still need some help.

On my own site I have 6 different categories, all set up as separate containers so that Inside each of those containers I have specific categories.

If I want to set up a category for a Travel group and another for a Photo group I was thinking that I don’t really want them to be visible to the current Sports group I have set up.

So on the demo I created a container (Main1) and then a subcontainer (Sub1). I assigned Sub1 to Main1 and it seemed to work fine. I then assigned StackIdeas (an existing category) to Sub1 which then put it down to the third level. It also worked.

On my site I am then thinking of creating three different containers: Sports; Photo; Travel... and then assigning my current sports containers to Sports, and their categories would then be moved as well. I would use the Photo container at the main level to set up other sub containers for (example) Techniques, Gear, Outings, Challenges etc... and then the same routine with the Travel container.

When you say set up specific groups, would I do that in my joomla user setup? Should I do this manually (I have all the emails and names for the groups. And then contact the users with their initial login information?

And... do I use the User panel in EasyDiscuss to assign that specific group to be the only one to access the new container... ie UserGroup Travel for Travel, and UserGroup Photo for Photo?

Thanks in advance... really appreciate your assistance.

Yes, you have to create new user group from your site backend > Users > groups > add new group .

However, I am not really sure what you mean contact the users manually regarding with their login information?

Is it you mean that you have to manually create user account for them from backend?

And... do I use the User panel in EasyDiscuss to assign that specific group to be the only one to access the new container... ie UserGroup Travel for Travel, and UserGroup Photo for Photo?

You can do it from Joomla user listing page also no problem.

Hi Arlex

I was thinking it might be easier for me to manually enter the names of the users in both groups. One group is spread out around the world, while the other is rather older and would appreciate having the initial setup done for them. Just trying to make it easier for everyone to get onboard from the start. I would then send them an email with a link to the login, and that would require them to set a new PW.

That’s good to know I can assign the groups from either the Joomla User setup or from within EasyDiscuss. I’ll try that out tomorrow with a couple of users... and keep my fingers crossed!

Thanks again for your help... will let you know how I make out.

HI Arlex
One thing I have noticed is that every time the Forum is opened it opens under Recent. I would like it to open up under Categories instead... and when there is more than one Category inside the Container(s) I would like only the Container(s) to show at first, without the expanded Categories that lie inside them.

Ie... In my Sports Forum, where Sports is the Container, there would be 4 separate categories... example. Equipment, Coaching, High Performance, Results

Next, in my Travel Forum, where Travel is the Container, there would be 3 separate categories... example. Mediterranean, River Cruising, Baltics

Lastly, in my Photo Forum, where Photography is the Container, there would be 4 separate categories... example... Gear, Showcase, Club News, Guest Speakers

So... when any member of the site opens up the Main Forum all they would see would be the 3 Container: Sports, Travel, and Photography

Depending on the permissions I give the individual members or member groups they would either have access, or not, to these Containers and the Categories within.

Is this possible? Fingers crossed!

Hi Again Arlex

This always happens... finally found the spot to toggle the Categories, however now I have lost being able to view the specific Categories within the Container. example. If I have Sports, Travel, and Photography only showing (which is what I would like, and can now do)... as soon as I open Sports I would like to see the 4 Categories within the Sports Container... instead I only see the posts, that were in those 4 Categories. I've tried about every combo of setting in Settings -> Layout but don't seem to be able to get that to work. Is it possible?

One thing I have noticed is that every time the Forum is opened it opens under Recent. I would like it to open up under Categories instead

If that is the case, you have to move your current "Easydiscuss - Frontpage Layout" menu (do not delete it) to hidden menu, then create a new menu type "Easydiscuss - Categories layout" so it will display all the categories on the page when you click that menu item.

... and when there is more than one Category inside the Container(s) I would like only the Container(s) to show at first, without the expanded Categories that lie inside them.

We do not have setting to hide that subcategory from the all categories layout but you can download my attached file then replace into this template override file location.

JoomlaFolder/templates/yourCurrentTemplate/html/com_easydiscuss/categories/default.php

Depending on the permissions I give the individual members or member groups they would either have access, or not, to these Containers and the Categories within.

Yes, you have to set those permission for the container and subcategories which belong to this container category.

For example : https://monosnap.com/file/caPKOJQkHclpFHk0zHmdtJh8xw0CQS

Hm, perhaps you can share with us some of the page URL so I can better have a look?
Because I still not quite sure if I understand you here.

Thanks Again Arlex

If that is the case, you have to move your current "Easydiscuss - Frontpage Layout" menu (do not delete it) to hidden menu, then create a new menu type "Easydiscuss - Categories layout" so it will display all the categories on the page when you click that menu item.

I did that... actually took the (newly hidden) Front-page layout out of my "Social" Menu Item (Separator) and moved into the new Menu Item "Forums" (also a Separator).

I then created a new menu item "Sports Forum" that open with the existing site forum Categories... and although they are all showing, Category and sub-Categories alike, that is ok for the general members... I'm good with that.

I'm going to mess around with your previous instructions now, and what I've refreshed myself on, with regards to creating the new users, new user groups and new group permissions within the Photo group and see if I can get it to open up directly to the Photo Categories. By creating a specific Menu Item "Photography and limiting permissions to the Photography Group, the menu item would only be visible to those in that group, and not the general members, correct?

Once I get that done I'll let you know... or you can let me know before that if I'm way off base! It's been know to happen

If you referring the menu item part, then you have to set the correct menu access level which user group you allow to access.

From the Easydiscuss category part, it will hidden if the user do not have permission to view this category.

Sure, keep us update if you need any assistance on this.

HI Arlex
I hope everything has been going well for you.

Just an update, and then a follow-up question.
I have been able to successfully use ED to set up three very distinct and private Forums on my site. It has involved:
• 3 Menu Items
• 3 Users Groups (corresponding to the 3 Menu Items)
• 3 VAL setting permissions to the 3 User Groups
• 3 main ED Categories (each one being a Container)
• "x" number of sub categories each within the respective Category (Container)
• 3 test users (different) with permissions to only open only the related Menu Item

• The Main Forum Menu is not viewable unless one is a Registered User (that's the way I wanted it)
• Upon Login the User sees the Edit Profile Page (I would prefer it go directly to the Private Forum though - Hints as to how I do this???)
• The Menu now shows the Forums Menu (perfect) but even though the Sports User may have logged in it shows not only the Forums Main Menu, but also the 3 Private Forum Group menu items.
• If the Sports User clicks on the Sports Forum they are taken directly to the Travel Forum.
• So far I have limited the main forum menu tab to only show the basic editing tools on the right side of the menu, but also (in desktop mode) the Home button and Categories on the left). Travel shows as the main Category with the Sub-Categories listed below (Perfect)
• It took awhile, but it appears the other 2 Private Forums are indeed that... Private... as when the Sports User tries to use the main Forums menu to access the either the Travel or Photo Forum they are redirected to a 404 - Page Not Found page... The page does provide a link back to "Go Back" or head over to the main club page but it is pug ugly at best... I have looked in the ED Menu and am trying to find where I can access a different 404 Page that is a little better looking, but that only would appear under the circumstances listed above... ie... Sports User tries to access the Travel Forum. Can you please direct me to this feature? or is it part of the Joomla Admin only?

Edit: Forgot to ask: When the Forums Menu shows up after login the Menu Item "Edit Account" also appears. Is this a function of ED or of Joomla. I don't want it there as the Forum users have the option of editing their profile from within their respective forums. Can I turn this off, or will that prohibit them from editing their Profiles while in the forum? Or, can I just make it "Hidden" to retain its functionality?

• Upon Login the User sees the Edit Profile Page (I would prefer it go directly to the Private Forum though - Hints as to how I do this???)

It would be best if you can update your site backend login access so I can easier to know what login form you trying to login from, so this will save time.

However, currently I do not know why it redirect to Easydisucss edit profile page after you login because there might involved the login redirection setting as well.

Can you please direct me to this feature? or is it part of the Joomla Admin only?

I can easier to check if you can update your site access and point us which page URL you trying to access and hit that 404 error.

You can download my attached file then override into your current template directory folder :
JoomlaFolder/templates/YourCurrentTemplate/html/com_easydiscuss/toolbar/default.php

Do take note, for those new folder you have to manually create it.

Hi Arlex
Just to keep you up to date... I have contacted Akeeba because I am having a real issue with getting tossed out of my joomla siteadmin all too often... and the only way to get back in (easily) is with the Aeekba Admin Tools link. They are looking at the setup now to see what is happening that is causing that. Sounds like my home IP address is getting blocked somehow.

As a result I haven't been able to work with my forum recently... but... I have been looking around to see if there might be a better way to serve the two clubs I am looking at setting something up for. One is a small (between 20 and 30 show up to bimonthly meetings - with no meetings now due to Covid_19). The other is also a similarly small travel group (from the last trip we were on) that are conversing by email.

In looking around for a solution I have come across lots of options, one of which includes your own EasySocial. Given the following would you think it might be a better fit for the two small groups, given:
• Both groups
- would be private and available only to their select, Registered groups : Photo and Travel
- could engage in chat amongst their group members
- could post photos for others in the group to view, and comment on
- could post videos and/or video links for other in the group to view
- could engage in private conversations with other members, without the rest of the group able to chime in
- could post in a calendar plugin (is there one built in?) meeting dates, club outing dates, or possible group trip dates

Those are the essential items that I can think of at this time.

Next:
• would I be able to do this within my existing site? using menu items and groups for specific access, or would I run into the same issues with this as I did with EasyDiscuss
• would it be better for me to just purchase a separate domain name for each group and then park the two new sites (Photo, Travel) with my host (Siteground) using the add-on domain feature?
• If it is the latter that is recommended, I would cover the cost of the groups myself - neither have any funds.. lol, but would this be allowed under the licence with Stack Ideas?

I would still retain EasyDiscuss but would put it back into its previous state, and not have to worry about the issues with private groups in one app?

Sorry about the length of the post again, but I have spent the last few days glued to the screen trying to come up with a solution. JomSocial has some nice features, like Group Albums. This would be especially useful for our Photo Group, all of whom are in their 70's and 80's... especially as they are all at home now in self-iso.

Cheers, Dan

I think your site have setup some security setting from Akeeba admin tool extension, only certain IP address can able to access your site backend.

Yes, this will be easy if want to include those thing like create an event for group trip or share video or link within the group and etc.

All these thing will be possible and easier to setup when you use Easysocial if you compare to Easydiscuss because Easydiscuss extension just like a forum purpose only.

But the only thing not possible in Easysocial is group conversation live chat, currently I am not sure whether you referring live chat or just like allow user to create a discussion in the group so all the group member can able to give some feedback within this discussion, if yes, then that will be possible to do this in Easysocial.

If you prefer Easydiscuss reply form, we have an app call "Discuss group" app which can integration with Easysocial. In other word, if the user want to create a discussion into Easysocial group, they can able to create a discussion from Easydiscuss extension which associated with that particular Easysocial group.

Next:
• would I be able to do this within my existing site? using menu items and groups for specific access, or would I run into the same issues with this as I did with EasyDiscuss

Nope, if you decide to use Easysocial, this is what you need to setup :

1. Create 2 new profile type in Easysocial then specific for different Joomla user group in each profile type.

2. Then admin have to manually create a few private group from backend Easysocial, then assign to those profile type for example :
- Photo profile type - Assign Photo group (Easysocial group) once user registered on the site, system will make them join to these private group automatically as what you have specify from the profile type setting.

- Travel Profile type - Assign Travel group (Easysocial group) once user registered on the site, system will make them join to these private group automatically as what you have specify from the profile type setting.

2. So whoever come to register on your site, they can able to choose which profile type they want to register.

• would it be better for me to just purchase a separate domain name for each group and then park the two new sites (Photo, Travel) with my host (Siteground) using the add-on domain feature?

Hm I can't comment this much but you have to remember one thing is the user database will not connect together if you separate domain site between photo and travel.

If you do not need both user database connect together then it should be no problem.

• If it is the latter that is recommended, I would cover the cost of the groups myself - neither have any funds.. lol, but would this be allowed under the licence with Stack Ideas?

Currently we don't have that but if you really interest for our Easysocial product, perhaps you can try start a new thread under pre-sales category on our forum so I will pass to our sales department team and see whether we still can offer some discount.

I would still retain EasyDiscuss but would put it back into its previous state, and not have to worry about the issues with private groups in one app?

I am not quite sure which private group or app are you referring to, is it you mean for those new Joomla user group you create on the site previously whether will affect the site?

Hi Arles... thank you for your patience with me as I try and work through all this.
Last night I was finally able to get my EasyDiscuss set up so that I had 3 private groups, each one able to access only their own discussions.

In the meantime I spent most of the day diving into EasySocial. I started by viewing the Webinar with Mark (just prior to the Release of ES I think), followed by a few independent reviews... and then a deep dive into both the front and back ends of ES.

Wow... I wish I had come across ES years ago! This looks exactly like what I would need to help our Photo55 group get together offline, especially during the current pandemic. As seniors they are very vulnerable... and many are alone. What a great thing it would be for me to provide this environment for them to share photos and take part on home photo challenges. They are afraid of FB and confused by Slack, both of which I have tried with limited success with them. If I can assure them that once inside EasySocial they would be the only ones that had access to their pages, photos etc I’m sure I could get most of them on board!

So... that is where I am still a bit confused. Inside ES I can set up a group... correct? Ie. as a member of ESPhoto I want to set of a Covid Photo Challenge Group, where all invited members of ESPhoto could post their challenge photos... then only the members of ESPhoto could see them .,. Do I have that correct?

I don’t want to allow members login through FB or twitter... just to avoid the inevitable questions about FB fear. So can I turn those options off and only allow logon through an ES login module? Is this something I would need to set up on my main menu as a sub-menu of say a Social menu item?

Referring to the quote above. I saw the Profile option in the SE backend demo and think I understand how that works. But, would I use the current Photo group is set up for ED or is that a different one I would have to set up in the back end of ES... as in your point 2 above.

I have some other questions (believe it or not these are all still related to my original question above private groups!) it will save those for follow up after you reply to these couple.

Last one here. From the sounds of it I should be able to build an ES environment, using one of the ES templates, within my own site (mvpsports.ca). Right now, the Forum menu does not show up until a visitor logs In. I am hoping I can retain the Social menu item in the menu, then have separate logins for ES groups and depending on which sub menu option a registered member chooses (ie. Photo, Travel, Sports) they would be directed to the private ES group only, with no access to the other groups. Thus would save me having to get separate domain names, set up subdomains... and still be able to use a common database as you said could only happen if I stayed within my site.

I’m sure there are pros and cons to each setup.
Thanks again for your patience and assistance.

By default it will not show social login button for the user as long as you didn't set it up from backend.

Yes, you can create a private group in Easysocial, whoever join this private group, user can able to share their photo while only group member can able to view it.

Referring to the quote above. I saw the Profile option in the SE backend demo and think I understand how that works. But, would I use the current Photo group is set up for ED or is that a different one I would have to set up in the back end of ES... as in your point 2 above.

One thing I need to clarify is as long as you login from either Easysocial or Joomla login form, the user do not need to login 2 times.

Yes, you can create Easysocial menu for particular private group and you can set this menu only accessible by certain Joomla user group.

As I have explained this before, you can use this way to let your client to decide which profile type they want to register to so they will auto join for those particular private group.

Thanks Arlex
Ensuring that our Photo group has complete privacy within their group members will be reassuring for them.

Actually I am not understand this point, do you mean you would like to show the discussion under Easysocial group?

I have looked at several of the Premium Templates and it looks like ED discussions can be viewed from within at least the Voyager template. That is more the style of site I am looking for (btw... my current site is at MVP Sports). The Forum menu will not show until the member logins in though. The Social Menu is showing but has links to only a Blog and another section of my site. In future if I could add sub-menus for Sports, Photo, Travel... all pointing to the EasySocial Private group that would be great.

I would then do the same with the Forum Menu, enabling it to show in the Main Menu with the SubMenus of Sports, Photo, Travel. When clicked the member would be directed to a Login, that would then take them to their Private group, whether it be the Forum or EasySocial (or both?)

OI have other questions regarding Easy Social. I looked at the ES Discussion Forum here to see if I could find the answer however I have no access to the replies as I don't have a licence yet. I'll post the questions here (in another reply) but if you would like me to post it elsewhere in your Discussions please let me know where.

Thanks again Arlex

Further Easy Social Questions. - These are questions I couldn't find the options for in the backend demo

• Can you turn off the Auto-send to FB and Twitter, Also, I didn't see in the demo backend where I could turn off the login using either FB or Twitter either - these would be necessary with the Photo group

• Is there an auto resize function for photos built not Easy Social?

• I noticed some demo templates include Photo Albums that allow EXIF and Commenting. This would be perfect with our Photo group. Is this an option that can be turned on and off?

• Can Individual members contribute photos to a Group Album?

• If I include the Users tab, is there a way of only showing the users for that Private Group? Currently it seems to show all registered users in my ED site

• Can I use a Stack Ideas for ES and still retain the YooTheme setup I have for my site?

• Can different templates be used for different Private ES groups?

• Is there a list of the components that are included with ES, and those that are included with the various templates? Just so I know how many add-ons I would require for my various ES groups.

Again, if this should be posted elsewhere please let me know.

Easydiscuss and Easysocial are different component, it depend on whether you want to create discussion under Easydiscuss or Easysocial group discussion or integration Easydiscuss discussion to Easysocial group.

1. Easydiscuss discussion post
- When the user create discussion under this component, it will show on Easydiscuss component page.

2. Easysocial group discussion (built-in)
- If you create a group in Easysocial, user can request to join this group in Easysocial, and then inside this group will allow group member to create discussion within this group.

3. Integration Easydiscuss discussion post to Easysocial group
- You need to install this Easydiscuss group app https://stackideas.com/apps/item/3320-easydiscuss-group , so user can create discussion under Easysocial group which can associated with your Easydiscuss group.

In other word, if initially discussion post you created in Easydiscuss first without install Easysocial and this app ( https://stackideas.com/apps/item/3320-easydiscuss-group), your discussion will never associated with your Easysocial group discussion.

Further Easy Social Questions. - These are questions I couldn't find the options for in the backend demo

• Can you turn off the Auto-send to FB and Twitter, Also, I didn't see in the demo backend where I could turn off the login using either FB or Twitter either - these would be necessary with the Photo group

Yes it is possible to turn it off.

• Is there an auto resize function for photos built not Easy Social?

Yes, when the user upload the new photo in Easysocial, it will generate different type of image size e.g. original, large, and thumbnail. And we also have image optimization service as well https://monosnap.com/file/DBmgfDq2sXmrj40FHbcSqqWvuXd1Rh .

• I noticed some demo templates include Photo Albums that allow EXIF and Commenting. This would be perfect with our Photo group. Is this an option that can be turned on and off?

You mean turn off for those EXIF and commenting?

Yes, we can turn off EXIF, but the comment only can turn off globally mean once you turn it off, everything can't be comment.

• Can Individual members contribute photos to a Group Album?

Can.

• If I include the Users tab, is there a way of only showing the users for that Private Group? Currently it seems to show all registered users in my ED site

Are you referring toolbar that user link? If yes, unfortunately that is not possible.

• Can I use a Stack Ideas for ES and still retain the YooTheme setup I have for my site?

Should be possible, it shouldn't affect your template.

• Can different templates be used for different Private ES groups?

Yes, it is possible, you can create single group menu item for your private Easysocial group then set the template inside the menu.

• Is there a list of the components that are included with ES, and those that are included with the various templates? Just so I know how many add-ons I would require for my various ES groups.

We do not have a list of the 3rd party template or app support for Easysocial, but you can view on our Appstore here. https://stackideas.com/apps/

Thanks Arlex
Pretty sure that EasySocial sounds perfect for our Photo Group, and maybe even the travel group too.
I already have a licence for ED. Is there an up grade path to the one bundle that includes ES, EB, and Komento?
I already have a Blog with my YooTheme Zoo component but could use the EB for a different Vlog setup I intend to start.

You're most welcome Dan.

Perhaps you can start a new thread on our forum so I will pass to our sales department team on this coming Monday?
