First off I want to start by saying bravo to the "Permalink" feature in apps that allow the admin to choose the url/name.

Currently it appears that the app id is included into the url when viewing the page. Here's an example: http://www.alpineascent.com/profile/107-test/57-article

But I have to ask, why not give the admin the ability to choose whether to include the id number? Perhaps "/57-article" could be the default for the permalink, but if the admin wanted to change it to "/article", they could (in theory). This would allow the apps to have as clean of url as possible with of course still giving the admins the choice of keeping the id if they didn't change the permalink. Attached is a screen shot of how it could work.
Hi,

It is possible and we will see if we can include this in the future.

Hi,

After discussing through with the team, we will not be proceeding with this due to some limitation and possible conflicts.

I'm glad it was considered. I'm curious about it's limitations/conflicts? Maybe we don't need a "make it yourself" permalink, but to be able to remove the id from the url would be nice. Especially when more advanced methods get used in the future that may extend the url even further.

Hi Josh,

The specific issue here is that the ID needs to be there to reduce the amount of conflicts. As we are using Joomla native functions to generate and read the alias, the Joomla way expects the format to be id-name.

Thanks for the reply Jason. So I take it this is why ES has this format for the users? So then currently with the profile the permalink uses an additional path to get to the user. Right? (I tested this which both id-username and permalink work at the same time) So if it can work for the user, why can't it work for apps? As you say the ID is required, but on the profile you folks found a way around that via the permalink. Could the same method be used for apps? Just trying to explore and understand this better.

Hi,

I am not saying it is not possible.

In early release of EasySocial, user's permalink actually does not contain an ID, this was added in later on. And the reason why it still works without ID for profile is because this was how it works initially.

I won't go in to the specific details but in short, although it does work with or without the ID, eliminating the ID causes some specific SEF issues (though not in general, and not everyone would encounter this issue). And as such we've decided to just stick to 1 standard, that is by including the ID regardless.

Thanks for giving me a better idea of this situation. What if the second method was added as an option (perhaps less visible) and had a note that said "May cause issues" when activated (in the backend of course). Just an idea. If it's too problematic I'll settle for what we have.

Hi,

You're welcome.

The decision now is to stick with the ID but perhaps we will revisit this in the future. I cannot give a guarantee on this.

Sounds fine. I know you guys have a lot of stuff on your plate. I promised Mark not to bug you guys too much these next few days considering the holidays and such. I often book mark threads of things to be relooked at in the distant future.
