I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is a weekend for us here. Yes, it was removed on purpose as user's were complaining that the sidebar looks too cluttered. Unfortunately we will not add these icons back because the new layout looks much neater and cleaner too.

If you want, you can always edit the theme file in the dashboard and since we are using Font awesome now, you can find the list of supported icons form http://fortawesome.github.com/Font-Awesome/
