When a user uploads a profile image (avatar), ES generates 10 images for that avatar!

I'll break it down:

1. thumbnail

2. featured

3. square

4. large

5. original

6. stock

Then the other four are purely for profile photo only:

7. 32x32 (small)

8. 64x64 (medium)

9. 180x180 (square)

10. 180x180 (large)

I know that most of these images have their purposes, but I do believe we can get rid of a few of these per avatar. When it comes to the avatar we can remove the second 180x180 photo considering that we already have one that is 180x180. In terms of regenerating the image, the stock image is supposed to be in charge of that. Also we don't need the 64x64 image considering that ES by default displays the tiny profile photo at 30x30 which makes the 32x32 the perfect image for the job.

In terms of non avatars, it appears the square photo (128x128) is only used to display tiny photos on the left side area. The squares are down sized to 36x36 via CSS. So why not have the images use less space? I suppose in the future there might be plans to make that aspect more responsive for bigger screens. 64x64 would do the job pretty well (or 72x72).
Hi Josh, thanks for highlighting this issue.

Well as you have already know I'm working part-time at overhauling the image engine which involves speeding up resizing time with better error handling, this means image variations and sizes will be taken into consideration. While it seems easy to resize locally, it gets hairy when it involves remote storage (S3).

Given the track record of the issues introduced over the creeping image changes from 1.2.11 to 1.2.14, I ought to (and also have been given direct orders from the other developers here) to perform better testing before it gets released.

By the way, what do you think about Pinterest layout for the album view over the current Tile Masonry layout?
There are performance issues with Tile Masonry layout (and some have told us they don't like their images appear square-cropped).

Understood about remote storage, sounds a little trickier. As for the testing, a fair statement. But I am glad that those issues got cleared up and now ES is slicker than ever. Even the apps are opening better than they were in ES 1.2.13 which I'm very pleased about (I didn't mention the issue because I knew you guys had a lot of other stuff to clear through). It sometimes required extra clicks due to some not working. But that is a thing of the past as of today.

As for the layout, I could not find the Pinterest layout option. I can see 2 pattern options "tile" and "flow". Perhaps I'm missing something? The photo app strings are currently broken as mentioned here making it harder to see the options from the app.

Regarding the image variations, I have no problem with image variations in general. However some image variations are not being used and some are bigger than they should be. I'm just trying to make sure ES doesn't use more space than it needs to use, but stores enough so that it's flexible and uses bandwidth well.

Hi Josh
I think Jensen might mean the website Pinterest's layout.... Speaking of layout outs Jensen will you guys do anything about the avatars on the mobile version not being responsive and their location in the middle of the cover photo? They're covering it up.

@Josh I was just suggesting if Pinterest layout would be an interesting idea to pursue.

@Antonio The avatar being in the middle of the profile cover is by design.
The avatar image scaling-out too much on mobile view has been fixed in 1.2.13 or 1.2.14.
Is it still an issue for you?

Hi Jensen
I understand they are placed there by design but they are very distracting and take away from the cover photo. The cover photo's are just as important as the avatars, so if it's covered up by the avatar it's disappointing and It just doesn't look good as you can see from some of my group's in the screenshots. Could you guys please consider this design issue, I must admit it's different but it's not flowing right in my opinion.

The Pinterest layout is indeed interesting, but is not my kind of style. Feels a bit too messy, especially with the captions distracting from the art. However I'm sure there are other folks who would like it. So if you have something made, don't let my comment deter you from adding it as an option.

Regarding the group layout on cell phones, here is my proposed layout style: http://www.test.alpineascent.com/new-theme.html

Notice how the avatar is not covering up the cover photo in any way? It not only looks better, shows more of both, but the cover photo actually ends up being less cropped which is also a good thing. Don't mind the glitches on the page, the two main images are what I'm trying to show.

Antonio, send me a link to that group page. I can draw up exactly what I believe would be the best display for mobile devices. It renders the cover image better too.
