Yes, you can actually manually add new member into the group from backend, you can check my attached screenshot below.

Thanks but this wasn't what I meant.

I meant that they are automatically assigned to a group at registration based upon their choice from a dropdown box.

Hello Paula,

EasySocial does not have such functionality currently but you can however, forcefully join them when they join to a specific profile. This settings can be found under Profile Types > [Click on the profile type] > Groups tab

Probably a silly question but I assume the profile type cannot be determined at registration by the use of the output of a dropdown?

Unfortunately no but if you have multiple user profile types, users could choose a profile type before presented with the registration form
