-> The archived item will not available online as you've archived it

2. And will the original links persist? Or is there a redirect?

-> They will not able to access the stream link anymore where it will shows error 404 and yes it will redirect if you've configure error redirection in your site

So to understand archiving...

It just wont show on the stream. So if someone uploaded a photo to their album, their photo is still there in the album. But just not on the stream any longer?

Yes it is. This archiving behavior is just to archive/hide you stream in case there are a lot of stream created on the length of time your site on your backend. All of you item will not archived and accessible as it should.
