I am sorry but animated GIF isn't supported and I am not sure if we are going to support it because we actually resize images when you upload them and when resizing, I am not sure if gif would be supported since it is just an image with multiple frames. Not sure if that is even possible

Sounds like GIF have to be a special case where no resize is applied upon upload.

Do you know if there are any image hosting sites that will work with ES to display animated picture embed or img src link?

Hoping there is a work around so members can post.
