Correct me if I'm wrong here, do you mean when you disable or enable the option http://take.ms/GqPs9 Show description for certain category, it will not effect on the front end category page?
or do you mean in the categories listing for the setting? http://take.ms/qzwTn

My Question was: Before the update, the list of categories could be made not to show details. but by clicking on a particular category, the details could be presented.
With the latest update, the details are either shown or not in both cases. so we have lost the option of not showing detail in the category list if we wanted to show detail only upon clicking on the category.

So please please try the combinations and see. The description either shows or it does not in both cases!
Before when the list of categories were rendered - the descriptions did not show. but by clicking on the individual category we could open up the description. Now it either shows in both cases or it does not. Please try it yourself.

Thanks for the details explanation, where you want to hide the category description on listing but display the description on the individual category page
Actually when you enable Always hide category description https://www.screencast.com/t/bmptqAMV2vY where it will hide the category description regarding what you have set in the single category setting http://take.ms/0uOQR .
I'm not sure which previous version that can hide description on listing but enabled in the single category where I've tested it in the older version of EasyDiscuss https://www.screencast.com/t/Fa1HNiF4sM0 it also have the same setting regardless what you've set in single category.
However, I'll logged this issue in our issue tracker so we can disable the description in the listing and shows it in the single category
