Hello EasySocial team!

I'm preparing a site for launch in Balti Moldova with your EasySocial platform as the cornerstone of our site. I have one problem that may be pretty large for me. When you use the address module that is built in you have the option of picking the USSR as your country. I'm not sure why this is an option as this country doesn't exist. There aren't options for Czechoslovakia or Burma so why the USSR? I also noticed the Democratic Republic of Yemen in there which was a separatist state that existed briefly in 1994. None of this really makes sense to me as included by default.

Basically my problem is this: I live in a place where the USSR is pretty recent and evokes very strong feelings. I can't afford to have this option on my site. Is there some way I can get rid of it?

many thanks!
Hey guys,

We're rendering the countries list via a JSON file. You can find it at /media/com_easysocial/apps/fields/user/address/countries.json

I'm guessing there will be a country list table in MySQL. ES tables are prefixed with social_

With other excel, I have simply exported this table into excellent, updated the field options and then reimported into MySQL. Probably the same for ES.

If you do a Google search, you can find an uptodate ISO/UN country list file.

I'm with David on this, the USSR should be removed from the country list. Perhaps we might have to remove it manually on our existing sites, but for future ES installs (fresh) it should be removed. I remember JomSocial back in the day had this in the list which I found strange. The country has been gone for over 20 years. Unless Russia is Putin on a big show, I don't think it will be back any time soon.

Hm, USSR has already been removed from the countries.json file. Are you guys on 1.2.0 RC3?

It's still in the list as seen here (ES 1.2 RC3):

But perhaps this is just from the past json file.

Thanks Mark. I'm also curious about "Reunion". I've looked at country lists many times and have never seen that.

Reunion is an overseas territory of France - I believe it belongs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Réunion

Another one that's possible trouble in the list is the Democratic Republic of Yemen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Republic_of_Yemen) which lasted for less than 3 mo in 1994 and was never recognized. Personally this one doesn't pose any trouble to me (like the USSR) but I thought I'd point it out.

Thanks for all the help!

Thanks David for pointing that out. That is certainly a high enough population to be recognized by the world. An accident mark would have helped me figure it out.

Hm, should "Republic of Yemen" be removed from the list?

No, according to Wikipedia: "Yemen officially known as the Republic of Yemen". The one mentioned was different.

I think you got mixed up with my last statement, "Republic of Yemen" is a real country. However I personally prefer to call it "Yemen". Just like how I don't call my country "United States of America".

Hey guys,

The "Republic of Yemen" or just "Yemen" is a country. The "Democratic Republic of Yemen" is not currently.

Hey guys,

The latest RC4 will only use "Yemen"

Thanks Mark. I'm now using RC 4 and I see "Democratic Republic of Yemen" as seen in this screen shot:

I also still see the USSR in the country list. Perhaps the file did not update? I'm guessing this is something we have to fix manually?

Ah, it looks like we are using a different field here. I was testing against the address field but I believe you are testing against the country field. Will fix this for good.

Yup, that is correct. I figured they got their values from the same location.
