Customization is quite easy as you can play with the CSS and you can use template override so that the changes will not get updated when you update easydiscuss component. However our stackideas forums layout is heavily customized in order to fulfill the requirement needed by our customer.

is it hard to custom or just need to do a little minor edit ?

I must say the modification is not easy and require lots of editing in the template file.
