the hyperlink in the email notifications I receive always results in the "error 404 page not found"

Could you provide us with the exact link generated from the e-mail notification? Also, is it possible for you to edit your post above to include the back end and FTP access as well?
I was clicking on an email generated before the site update. I have just added a new post and will check again once I receive a new email.

You hit his "404 error" because your category's discussion is not visible for "public" user group as you can see here http://screencast.com/t/fitsOyJo0SU. Actually, you got to way to overcome this issues, that is by set "public" user group to be able to view your discussion, or by enabling "Enable Error Redirection" at backend>components>easydiscuss>Advance>General as shown http://screencast.com/t/uArWNi6pPD8. Please give it a try and see how it goes.
