the hyperlink in the email notifications I receive always results in the "error 404 page not found"
How can I overcome this?

Could you provide us with the exact link generated from the e-mail notification? Also, is it possible for you to edit your post above to include the back end and FTP access as well?

Site details have been updated with username etc.
this is an example address that I get that leads to the page not found 404 error. I ended up here after submitting a post and clicking "log out" on my site.

I can see that the site is updated - thank you for that. However I still get the page not found error when clicking on the link in email notification;

Are you clicking on an e-mail generated prior to the update or are you testing this on a new e-mail generated from the site?

I was clicking on an email generated before the site update. I have just added a new post and will check again once I receive a new email.

You hit his "404 error" because your category's discussion is not visible for "public" user group as you can see here http://screencast.com/t/fitsOyJo0SU. Actually, you got to way to overcome this issues, that is by set "public" user group to be able to view your discussion, or by enabling "Enable Error Redirection" at backend>components>easydiscuss>Advance>General as shown http://screencast.com/t/uArWNi6pPD8. Please give it a try and see how it goes.
