(1) How can I hide the news feed so it does NOT show on the front page of the profile - login page. When I log out I only wish to show the register / login feature and NO stream or News feeds?

(2) how can I add a custom photo on the login registration page so anyone who visits the site can see it prior to joining?

You might want to go to Backend>Easysocial>Settings>General and turn on this option: http://screencast.com/t/FSvKUZwu .

May I know which page you are referring to? Perhaps, some screenshots.
