I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is a weekend for us here.

I couldn't find enough information about permalinks and I couldn't understand some of the posts here in the forum, could you please explain what the benefit of it to the users?

I have checked if the user enters the link as mentioned in another thread in the following format (http://mysite.com/[menu-alias]/profile/permalink) but it doesn't work on my site and it doesn’t bring up any profiles.

Do you mean the "Permalink" custom field? If yes, it should show the permalink as what user set from their profile, if it not working for you, may i know did you install Sh404sef or mijoSEF extension in your site?
Also can you provide us with your Joomla backend and FTP access so we can help you check on this?

Also please let us know if ES version 1.4 will be released soon with the facebook style links? We hope the answer is yes.

Easysocial 1.4 still under development phases, by the way may i know what you referring on Facebook style links? Perhaps you can provide us more elaborate more detail regarding this.

Yes that what I meant by the Permalink extra field which the users enter when they create their account, I don’t have Sh404sef or mijoSEF installed and I’m just wondering what is benefit of it, does it automate creating a direct link to the user’s profile like for example http://www.facebook.com/StackIdeas ?

If yes, unfortunately that was not possible.
