Hi SI Team & Community

Apologies in advance I know this is going to be long and rambling and even if no one replies I can live with that. I am trying to nail my thoughts about video functionality in the SI universe… (Currently planned for ES 1.4.) I can imagine how deep the rabbit hole can go. Kind of ;-) But frankly can not nail the the depth and breath of the rabbit hole together!!! i.e. I have no idea how much SI could/should do and how much can be done with existing 3rd party products! I am also aware of the Apple Zen like strategy of rolling out a snow ball like product with the minimum amount of features. The features are few but essential and with time the other features get added if and when required. Hence the snowball. Needless to say it is essential to get a nice round solid ball rolling… I think that I will post a number of times as my thoughts crystallise…

Let me start here with the deceptively simple task of being able to find things!!!

I am a Mac for the simple reason I need the graphics programs that run on mac. Mac is for me nothing other than an expensive dongle and I have to live with that. End of story.

All is not rosy in the Mac world. For example the file management system has been a complete disaster for many years. My simple example is that I have a folder for “pictures” and one for “documents” Inside these folders I have “Blog Pictures” and “Blog Articles” i.e. “Blog Pictures” is in the “pictures” folder and yes “Blog Articles” is in the “documents” folder. Surprise, surprise I end up constantly switching between these folders which is a pain. I am currently on Mavericks and there were some new features introduced about a year ago… There is now a thing called tagging! Which means that I can have my cake and eat it. Things can be in multiple places!!!!!

From an article that I wrote:

Tags are really, cool. I can keep my pictures in my pictures folder and my texts in my text folder and, tag them. The text and pictures for the “First Article” get a tag, “First Article” and I can search for anything with the tag, “First Article.” If you want to get a feel for this the quickest way is to try playing with the labels in the side bar of the Mavericks finder. They are after all a very basic tagging system. The best thing about Tags, in Mavericks, is that I can search for them with Spotlight, just, as I would search for a file, i.e. by using the name of the tag! This little detail, alone could almost send me back to the standard OS X finder…

full article is here:
http://finalbug.net/blog/entry/367-not-all-finders-are-equal

I know virtual nothing about the PC finder system but I am willing to bet that it is at the very least better than the pre Standard Mavericks system!!! On a side note I have been on Pathfinder for years ;-)

So that is basically my first thought with respect to the Video functionality in the SI Universe.

However it is implemented and by whomever it is really important that there is a big old box somewhere that allows me to do Boolean searches as illustrated in the video below. Imagine that I get to a point where my Site is really big and I want to be able to search 1,000s of videos for complex tasks etc… Needles to say part of this equation is that I can tag my videos as I embed/encode them… depending on how video functionality is implemented!!!

Yes I am Boolean mad. More later…

best

@Paul I just re-read your post above on the importance and relevance of
the deceptively simple task of being able to find things!!!"
and it really hits home with me both that

  1. Getting this thing done right gives ES users lots of value and competitors lots of stress
  2. We're lucky SI has a track record for making such difficult design & implementation tasks deceptively simple

As someone who has expertise in the area of video use, editing, functions, etc. you're input is pretty unique and valuable. Taking in your input helps create user-centered design as you help us understand the optimum flow through ES that fits user tasks, and how well the response of ES fits user expectations.

As I noted in another thread, I found an interesting PHP script called "Youtube Music Engine". It illustrates what I believe a habit forming, simple, elegant, and useful way to present a door and engine into a social site's video features. Here's what I mean by "habit forming" and why I think some of the UI/UX features along with search capabilities is important from another thread:

I think the "why" we keep thinking about it [the PHP script I linked above] is exactly what we want our users to be doing when at our site using ES. Of course all successful niche sites need members and content, but beyond that, if the site has a UI/UX "hook" that helps connect customer problems to our ES-based solution, it makes using our site a "habit". So in your example, and forgive me if I don't have it exactly right, but I guess you may have a community of video professionals who need to connect, share, and learn all about video production/editing. Now if your site has that, PLUS the UI/UX experience has a great "hook" (i.e. simple pin-like board of video images) that has a useful function (can be sorted) it can create repeated and unprompted user engagement. The idea is that the users need for information or community triggers them to connect to your site, seeing the pin-like board of sorted topics gives them an easy "action" (click) and their "reward" is getting right to the information they were seeking, hopefully prompting them to "invest" time in engaging by commenting, sharing, etc.

This concept of habit-driven user engagement is broken down and explained further in a presentation you can view here.

Hey Eileen

Yeah I think we agree about a lot of this stuff. I am not really sure what your background is but I think you have a very good intuitive grasp of what is what in the world of video

The "habit forming" thing is also important and I am sure it would be music to Randall's ears. Maybe if he sees this thread he would like to chip in… Like I hate Facebook but you have to hand it to them they made it pretty addictive!!!

And yes the customer/developer relationship is a really valuable thing in the SI universe. There is so much stuff out there that is frankly “Mediocre” and Mediocre just does not cut it in the long run

Things that I have seen that look kind of similar to your PHP script link include:

http://www.tigracon.com/socialboards-for-jomsocial-easysocial-and-combuilder.html

And I know from other threads that we have both had this on our respective radars:

http://hwdmediashare.co.uk/tour

I find it also extremely interesting that you extracted an answer form Mark about above said link here:

http://stackideas.com/forums/video-live-stream-channel-extension-integration-with-easysocial

from Mark

I probably think you need to choose between HWD Videos or EasySocial videos. The problem is that not everyone wants to use an external extension to serve their videos and we cannot be dependent on HWD to serve videos as well.

I also suspect that whilst the HWD route is likely to be over kill for many that there system is so flexible that you could start with embedding You Tube Videos and then move onto more fancy stuff as your site grows! The foundation would be there from the start...

In the above thread there is also the following link:

Referring to the imminent arrival of HWD MediaShare v2 integration with EasySocial

I really need to take a good long look at HWD but if you can Tag/Search stuff in it which I am pretty sure you can then that alone does it for me. And if I can have some kind of Pinterest like page with Boolean searches I am in! Also like the idea of being able to tie up videos from several sources which I am guessing is also possible. Eg Take videos from “Blog” Posts and “Events” and have them on the same page! They have several products and I am still not clear about if it is one out of the box product that does pretty much everything or if need to buy several components and join the dots!!!

For anyone who has not heard of Pinterest

https://www.pinterest.com/

I guess it is a question of how much do people want to invest in the video side of things. My angle is very clear. I do not really see myself writing so many Blog posts in max 3 years! I see myself doing video tutorials, tips and trick etc. I have a video background so that makes sense. However it is pretty obvious what will happen if you google the future of online videos versus online blogs. Sure it is not black and white but videos will have much more growth potential!

In the screen shot (mock up) of hwfMediaShare (2 links above) there is what looks like a little App with the name of “Media” which is located on a test users profile. This combined with a Payment system…
Hmm I am guessing here but this is getting pretty close to a LMS and with the ES PROFILE/community thing as the spine of this beast. Now I think that is bl**dy exciting! Sorry watched a mockumentary vampire film last night ;-)

Still have my thinking cap on with respect to playlists and tags. In a weird kind of way tags are for me the key!!!

Would love to here more thought from you Eileen or maybe there are some other people lurking here who would like to come out into the open. I will post more when I have time as things become clearer for me…

best

Paul
