Hi there,

I just noticed something that i am not sure is meant to be. When a user chooses a user name, they are forced to use one with no spacing with them (for example: davidjudah). The thing is that it shows on their timeline in bold. What if someone wants to write their name normally, with natural spacing (for example: first name, sir name: David Judah). At the moment that is not possible, though it was possible before.

Is that some kind of error? Why does it force the user name to appear at the front page and not the person's real name?
Thanks for updating this Josh, we'll add this into 1.2.8

Hi Mark,

I read the post but in it you did not answer the last question which was, will you allow spacing in a username or not?

I just tested that both the latest versions of Joomla 2.5 and Joomla 3.2 allow username spaces. We already knew about J 3.2, but now it's confirmed in J 2.5 which is great news! (no switches have to be made to enable this) Considering that we do not have a CMS constraint for the username space, I don't see why not to allow a username space.

Hi,

To be honest with you all, judging from the core codes in Joomla, seems like Joomla 2.5 actually intended to NOT HAVE spaces in the username. It is just that, there is a bug in their "regex" checking that didn't check for spaces in username, in which I am passing it off as a bug, and assuming that they've fixed it in 3.2.0, since 3.2.0 was the first build that actually didn't allow spaces in username.

And it has come to my attention that, they, once again, changed it in 3.2.1 (including the commentary in the core codes) to allow spaces.

And as such, we will be patching this on our part to allow spaces in the username in the next release.

Whew, that makes sense. Thanks for investigating this Jason. I appreciate the integrity of you folks wanting to stick with Joomla's standards. Glad to hear about this being included within the next release.

Hi,

If you'd like you can try this now by replacing this file I've uploaded at /media/com_easysocial/apps/fields/user/joomla_username/helper.php. This will allow spaces in username.
