Is there any chance that future releases of EasyBlog (and the other SI extensions) could use the built-in Joomla updater rather than it's own one?

We use myJoomla.com to remotely update client sites to keep them up to date so it's always far preferable if we can use Joomla's built-in updater rather than custom ones which can only be updated manually on a site-by-site basis.
Hey Simon,

The problem is the size of EasyBlog is relatively huge and most hosting providers aren't able to do large file uploads. On average, I see that most hosting providers allow 2 - 4mb of filesize upload. EasyBlog itself is nearly 18MB

Is there a need for it to be so big as standard? Or to have the data all in one chunk?

I notice that during any install or upgrade it offers all of the addons and the vast majority of these I don't need however it becomes laborious checking/unchecking them all each time I process an update so I often just leave them all checked, so installing everything.

Not sure if this counts towards the overall size or not but certainly it would be great to reduce the core install size considerably and then offer the extras as optional additional installs? (Similar to JoomGallery or JCE, who allow you to install the core, then have a section where you can choose to install additional extras).

Hey Simon,

I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is a weekend for us here. The size itself is caused by the amount of functionality that exists within EasyBlog. It has tons of feature and a media manager. Apart from that it also has more than 20 themes. All of these contributes to the size of the installer

I would say that a huge chunk of the file size is contributed by the themes.

Would there be any chance of perhaps just having one theme by standard and then allowing us to install additional ones as and when required if they are contributing so much to the overall install size?

Or even, and I admit I don't know how the Joomla updater works, if there was some way of the updater at least notifying us of an update even if it can't install it directly itself?

The only reason I ask is that the Updater (and services like MyJoomla.com) make it far easier to monitor sites and keep them up to date and therefore secure whereas extensions which don't use the updater can often be left out of date or insecure and therefore become a risk to the site itself. As a site developer, from my point of view, it's far preferable using extensions which I can update alongside all others instead of having to manually check and apply to each and every site.

This is something which I'm looking out for more and more now when choosing extensions and if they don't use the Updater then I often avoid them.

That could work if we only provide 1 theme by default but I am not too sure effective this is to be honest. We'll see what can be done in the near future to avoid this issue.

The one and only reason that we have our own installer is mainly to overcome the standard upload_max_filesize that most hosting providers has by default. It's silly I know but you would be surprised that most of them have it set at 2mb.
