For quite some time every time I upgrade EasySocial I cannot do it from the backend auto update. On step four it says "Downloading Installation Files... Failed Please download the new launcher from our site at http://stackideas.com/dashboard".

I understand a new launcher being needed for major releases. Having to install a new launcher on every release defeats the purpose of ES's backend auto updater. Upgrading with the launcher from ES 1.3.17 to ES 1.3.18 worked just fine. I kept the test site as ES 1.3.17 so that you can see the issue.

P.S. Well done with the new upgrade interface in ES 1.3.18, quite visually pleasing! As always, thanks for being our Joomla heroes.
Hi guys,

Can you download this file and put it in your site here: .../administrator/components/com_easysocial/easysocial.php . This will fixed the update button at the backend. I am sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Thanks.

Hi Josh,

Thanks for your concern about the auto updater. I believe this is the correct behaviour of EasySocial where if there is a new version of launcher is release, you need to download it from our site. Thanks for your compliment.

Hi Jan,

Can you explain more so that we can understand your issue better. By the way, it is best for you to create a new thread on this and do provide us with the backend access and FTP access as well so that we can assist you better.

Thanks.

If that's the case, why even have the update button in the backend if it fails 100% of the time? A while back the update button in ES used to update the component. The current setup is leading people to think that ES cannot properly update, but in reality it's because a launcher is needed with each upgrade. So either the backend update feature needs to be able to install a new launcher too, or it needs to be hidden/removed. Otherwise people will keep hitting the update error. The auto update feature is a cool addition to ES for admins which is why I think it would be better to repair it instead of removing it.

Also note that as of ES 1.3.18 the "Get Updates" button brings you right back to the dashboard instead of the installation page. ES 1.3.17 brings you to the installer page as expected. I assume this has to due with the revamp of the installer in ES 1.3.18.

Hello Josh,

The "Update" button is there for instances when you do not need a new launcher

Thanks Mark for the reply,

Those seem to be quite rare these days. I haven't gotten the upgrade button to work for many months.

Anyways as stated above:

"Also note that as of ES 1.3.18 the "Get Updates" button brings you right back to the dashboard instead of the installation page. ES 1.3.17 brings you to the installer page as expected. I assume this has to due with the revamp of the installer in ES 1.3.18."

So now even in rare instances where a new launcher is not required the update button brings you back to the dashboard (as of ES 1.3.18) instead of the installation page. This makes it impossible to work for the moment. I know ES 1.3.19 just came out, but it is hard to test the update button when you are using the latest version.

Hi,

This fix is not included in the current version of EasySocial v1.3.20 . You need to put this file in your site so that when the newer version is releases, you can update EasySocial through updater button.

If anyone who doesn't update yet to the latest, you can try put this file and test the button. I am really appreciate support from you guys.

Awesome Mohd! The file replacement mentioned above fixes two issues with upgrading. It fixed the update button not directing you to the upgrade page and allowed seamless upgrade from ES 1.3.19 to ES 1.3.20 without needing to install a new launcher. I hope this gets included in the next release. I had to use my test site to produce the mentioned result considering that my real site was upgraded before the replies above.
