Hi guys,

referring to this request
http://stackideas.com/forums/total-of-posts-in-a-category
I'm wondering whether I can't reproduce the given answer in the category module of EasyDiscuss

Pls. be so kind to have a look into the attached pdf.

1. category overview doesn't reflect the hierarchy I've created - don't know whether it is a problem
2. hierarchy is published in a right manner in the module and in ED-Toolbar dropdown
3. number of totals as the sum of subcategories is wrong

What was I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Best regards,
Ralf

Hey Ralf,

Is it possible for you to provide us with the back end and FTP access to your site to check on this issue?

Not a problem. Keep us updated once you have the access details on your hand.

If you are requested to submit your site details, you may do so under the tab Site Details below. Please be rest assured that these information will only be visible to the support team from Stack Ideas.

Hi Mark,

Pls. would you be so kind to check the ftp-access again.

We've tested the access data on several computers without any problems.
We started with this provider some days ago and we were wondering about some availibility issues.
Maybe this was the reason.

Pls. let me know whether I can support you otherwise.

Thanks in advance

Best,
Ralf

Hello Ralf,

I've compared with the backend category structure and it is the same: http://screencast.com/t/onyfxjXrGvd . Did I miss anything?

- number of totals as the sum of subcategories is wrong
It is actually the correct behavior. The count is referring to the post in that particular category.

Hi Nick,

my issue is that I do not really agree with you regarding the presentation of the counts.
And your EB team wouldn't, too...

No discussion about single categories, but I'm using some categories as placeholders.
My understanding of a correct behavior is that such a category should either have no number or the total of the subcategory counts.
To show a "(0)" for a placeholder doesn't make sense - and you're doing it the right way with the EB Categories-Module .

So maybe you should initiate a SI meeting to discuss the right behavior: The ED way or the EB way (which I would prefer)

I'm using both modules in a presentation and really do not know how to explain the different approaches to my customer...

Best,
Ralf

Hello Ralf,

My opinion is to have a checking if the category is a placeholder, don't show the count. What say you? I can include this in the next release.

Hello Nik,

I rather would prefer the "total of subcategories" solution.

This is the usual approach (see EasyBlog Category module) and you also can find this in many other applications.
User's goal always is to get a quick overview - and numbers are helpful.

And I really recommend to have a unique approach over all the SI applications - this is a kind of quality standard.
As I told you, I don't know how to explain to a customer why there are different approaches within different applications from one provider.

Btw. Nik, reflecting my view there is still another issue in EasyDiscuss:
There is no "unsolved items" start page - only "unanswered". As a solution focused guy I'm interested in an overview of "unsolved issues" - I want the information what has to be solved - not was has to be answered.

ED really is a fantastic application and maybe will get a litte more fantastic with this start view within the next release.

Have a nice weekend, guys.

Best,
Ralf

Hello Ralf,

Thanks for the heads up. I've added the Unsolved start page in our feature request list. As for the subcategories count, I've modified your site to display it. can you please check and verify?

Dear Nick,

pls. would you be so kind to ckeck it yourself, too and count the numbers manually...

There are only a few numbers and you will see immediately that the logic of counting the totals is not correct.

Ralf

Hello Ralf,

I've checked and the count is correct after the modification I made: http://screencast.com/t/B0GKgU0w . Just want you to re-checked if I missed anything.

Hello Nick,

It seems that we're talking about different things.
What I want is the total of items of the subcategories - not the number of categories.

Let me explain it in detail, howe it should work (and how it works in EasyBlog Category module):

-----------------------------------------------------
[ CPL] = Category as placeholder (no items in this category)
[ CI ] = Category with items
-----------------------------------------------------

Level 1 [ CPL] = 21 items !!! - total of 1.1 and 1.2
|--- Level 1.1 [ CPL] = 13 items !!! -> total of 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 and 1.1.3
| |--- Level 1.1.1 [ CI ] -> 4 items
| |--- Level 1.1.2 [ CI ] -> 5 items
| |--- Level 1.1.3 [ CPL ] = 4 items !!! -> total of 1.3.1.1
| |--- Level 1.1.3.1 [ CI ] -> 4 items
|
|--- Level 1.2 [ CPL] = 8 items !!!!! -> total of 1.2.1 and 1.2.2
_ |--- Level 1.2.1 [ CI ] -> 5 items
_ |--- Level 1.2.2 [ CI ] -> 3 items

Not shown in this example is an additional feature of EasyBlog.
E.g. Level 1.2 would not be a placeholder but a category with 5 own items the shown number would be 13 (5+5+3) and not 8 (and Level 1 would show 26 and not 21)

You can reproduce this in EasyBlog categories. Have a look at "Themen" on my site.

Hope this helps, Nick.

Best regards,
Ralf

UPDATE: Nick, pls. have a look at the attachment - your editor does not support spaces as expected.

Hello Ralf,

Ah, I see. Sorry for the confusion earlier. I've reverted back the changes. We need to get in depth checking for this. I will add this in our tracker for the next release.

Hi, Mark, appreciate you looking into this and look forward to receiving your update. Thanks!

Hi, Ralf, this is also the behavior I would expect of ED. I had made similar comments in my previous post (http://stackideas.com/forums/layout-ordering-for-categories-and-tags). Thanks!

Hi SI Newbie,

I'm shure you'll find some more switches in the next release to count the total of the categories and the total of items within each category and the total of items of a main category which is a placholder and so on....
This is my experience how the SI guys understand doing their job to convince you ;-)
Give'em sone days and it will work as suggested

My opinion is that functions like this (in a module) should work identical over all SI components to get not only a visual but also a functional standardization. But for shure, it needs some days to bring the historical approaches in one line.

Best regards,
Ralf

Totally agree, Ralf!

Folks like Nick, Arlex, and Ezrul are always helpful. Mark is always on overdrive as well.

I'm sure they'll deliver now that they're in agreement the feature is both logical and useful to customers.

Thanks to the Stackideas team for the support!
