When a user gets a notification and you click on the world icon to read the notification, once i've read the message i'm finding the notification (Number in red) is still there until i change or refresh page!

If that's the cause, they should be updated every 30 seconds.
I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is a weekend for us here. There's a service running in the background to update the counter. What is the interval set currently?
