I'd like to suggest better subscription module. Better means admin can set a category user is about to subscribe to.
People usually are annoyed by receiving tons of email notification, so being more specific could make them subscribe to the topic they want.
Unlike regular "subscribe" to category link, module is more visible and makes better conversions.
