Note!
Where we are it is now the weekend; so there might be a slight delay in our reply. Thanks for understanding!Migrating from J1.5 to J2.5 with SectionEx
-
I see that there may be a post on this topic but since I am not a premium member I can't access it. I will ask it here and hope someone will still help me.
I have been a big fan of SectionEx on my 1.5 site but now need to migrate to a new 2.5 site. Is there a way to get the same layout and functionality that SectionEx provided in Joomla 2.5? Is there an update somewhere for SectionEx that I am not able to find?
Sincerely,
MaestroC

My biggest concern is future support considering past record. (Not meaning to be offensive at all, do what makes you money!) I have taken over a website that relies heavily on SectionEx. I am still learning Joomla and would prefer not to learn with a custom plugin. I presume I can learn to setup the site without needing this plugin on 2.5 now data has been migrated with SP Upgrade?
(Any recommended guides?)
I am looking at purchase of your other plugins, just prefer the main site is not reliant on such a deep plugin.
Kind Regards

An old thread but similar question as a new customer:
I recently purchased the bundle but have not downloaded SectionEx as it is still 1.5 and not suitable for 2.5, is there any news of an update to 2.5 or replacement product release? If it is going to be discontinued do we use Section List instead?

For what it's worth, having the functionality of SectionEx on Joomla 2.5 and having it look similar to what you have on your FAQ, I would be willing to pay real money for - no matter what my subscription says. Please reconsider your pipeline - from the face of things you seem to be very close. -
Hello,
Yeah, there could be some changes in SectionEx but the main problem like I have posted earlier was actually because of the missing "Sections" and we had to make it compatible with Joomla 1.5 and 2.5. Since 1.5 is already obsolete, we have to drop the support for Joomla 1.5 altogether and work on something that is more solid for 2.5.

Hello,
Would someone kindly tell me how to unsubscribe from this thread? I kept it open just in case....
I am as astonished at the patience of board members as I am dismayed at the utter inanity of the situation. This discussion began back in January 2012. We are now 6 months on from there...
Mark:
In January you had a working version for J1.7 (not so different from J2.5)
In January you were contemplating backwards compatibility with J1.5
Then in January you agreed there was no point in making the J2.5 release backwards compatible
In March you told Chad you wanted backwards compatibility
In April you had a working copy "internally" [sic], presumably the same working version you had in January
In May you were once again talking about backwards compatibility with J1.5 ignoring completely the self evident fact that J1.5 was no longer being supported
Later in May you seem, finally, to have bitten the bullet and decided the new release will be J1.6-J2.5 (thank goodness for that hurdle crossed)
In June you have a working version used on your site FAQ
Later in June you still have no ETA and now not even a beta
Go figure... or am I under the misguided delusion that I'm not the one in the madhouse?
Good luck to you all,
Ric -

Hello,
I wouldn't take that as a "no"
But it's more like a general information about the bundle (in case other users are wondering). If you take a look at our new site's FAQ, it runs off SectionEx on Joomla 2.5
We just need to get things sorted out with the package and the rest should be good to go

Hello Geoffrey,
Yes, we're working on it. If you take a look at http://stackideas.com/faq.html it's actually running on SectionEx. We'll most likely be only releasing a 1.6 - 2.5 version of SectionEx but 1.5 users can still use the older version.

Hello Geoffrey,
We are actually working on our new site which will be on Joomla 2.5 and regardless, we too need it to work on Joomla 2.5
We have a working prototype already and we only need to finish up the touches on the design and some of the language strings. Will keep you posted when there's an update

Hello guys,
I am sorry if I missed this thread. Okay, what we actually planned for SectionEx is to create a new version that would work on all Joomla versions, 1.5 and 2.5. Joomla has already ended the support for Joomla 1.5 and I think although 1.5 support has ended, we'll still need to ensure backward compatibilities for users who are still reluctant to move to 2.5.
Here's a screen shot of what SectionEx 2 would look like.

So I gather Joomla eliminated Sections for a a reason... Will you keep the section feature active in a new version for 2.5 and beyond to allow those who have used sections in the past? It might be nice to relate sections to the enhanced group feature of Joomla 2.5. making it user oriented as mentioned above.
Additionally, what interested me about SectionEx was "Multiple Themes - Customize the look & feel of your sections & categories with our stylish themes"... This alone would be a great feature to keep SectionEx active.
My confusion arose when EasyBlog 2.5 and Easy Discuss 2.5 were bundled together with SectionEx. You tout in your Bundled article that "All versions. Joomla! 1.5, Joomla! 1.6, Joomla 1.7 and the latest Joomla! 2.5. Currently, only SectionEx is compatible with Joomla 1.5" I read that meaning that it was the only one backward compatible to Joomla 1.5. When I went to install it I found that it was not compatible in Jooomla 2.5. Thus no reason to bundle it in my opinion. I would like to see a SectionEx 2.5+ in the near future compatible with current versions of Joomla. I would hope you would honor the bundle package with a free upgrade. -
Hi Mark,
I cannot understand why you are re-opening this backwards-compatibility debate because:
1. You already have a working version for Joomla 1.5 and, since that is effectively frozen, you are already there with a 1.5-compatible version. Why have two products both compatible with J1.5?
2. J1.5 is no longer supported by Joomla so why are you trying to create a new product to support an unsupported base?
The logic behind what you say is no logic at all. If you already have a working copy, I cannot understand why in the space of 3 months you have not got it out there?
Nothing else explains the choice between having a working J2.5 compatible product (which for some reason you won't release) and a non-working product (because currently it is not compatible with both J2.5 and a now defunct and security-ridden Joomla 1.5). Even more perplexing is that you say this is even after Joomla have released a security advisory to upgrade to the very latest version. Not one bit of this stacks up I'm afraid, so I am led to believe you do not have a working product or a product that is fit for release and everything else is smoke and mirrors.
All we are asking for is a definite yes or no. If yes I am sure a few of us would be prepared to wait (a little more); if no then we can stop pestering you and let you get on with your life. I look forward to your team's decision.
Best wishes,
Ric-
Since J!1.5 is going out of support soon it makes sense to me to have a 2.5 version and discontinue support for the 1.5 version when J!1.5 is no longer supported. This is what a lot of template designers are doing and I also see the same trend in SEO tools. A few companies are focused on backward compatibility but it introduces some problems. 1.5 compatibility means old PHP compatibility. Because the new PHP is more efficient and more secure it makes sense not to continue to support the old versions. But that is just my thinking on it. :-) I also am looking for something like SectionEx for K2. However I found that I could just customize the themes/overrides for K2 and get exactly what I wanted. I think SectionEx should be more user-oriented and be a community hub for sharing both web-links and articles. I would use it to create "localized" categories for users. So if a user is in Thailand they would get articles/links relevant to where they live. Ideally it would be fully integrated with both EasyBlog and EasyDiscuss so that users could have a "Blog about this" and "Discuss this" buttons for each link. Tho I good commenting system would work too.

Hello Ric,
I am really sorry for the confusions. We actually have a working copy already internally but this version does not work with Joomla 1.5. Perhaps my replies was a little conflicting in a way but I sincerely apologize if that offends you in any way. The bottomline is that we're still deciding on whether to continue this pursuit or stick with only 1.5.
I'll get back to you once the team finalizes this. Thanks for understanding.

Hi Mark,
I'm surprised when you say:
"...but the problem is that Sections are removed altogether in Joomla 2.5, and we're actually trying to substitute Sections with Category and to make things worst, we need to have backwards compatibility with Joomla 1.5 as well."
Back in January (Tue, 17 Jan 2012, 09:00 PM) I discussed this and said:
"Why backwards compatibility is even mentioned I have no idea since anyone sticking with J1.5 can use the existing 1.5-compatible SectionEx - both are effectively frozen."
Your reply (Tue, 17 Jan 2012, 10:12 PM) was:
"Hello Ric,
Thanks for the heads up! I will forward this to the team and yeah, I do agree with your point here that since April will be the end of life for Joomla 1.5, there's really no point making it back ward compatible with Joomla 1.5
"
There is a good many of us out there who like this extension and really would like to see a J2.5+ version (the product is fundamentally very good).
However, we seem to be going round in circles and now I am beginning to think your many replies are a "put off" and that you have no intention of making further progess on this front. If so, that's fine, but please tell us so we can make decisions either to wait for a definite intended release that will happen or go a different route - even if that means purchasing an alternative product. Why am I being so hard on you? Well on Tue, 17 Jan 2012, 10:22 AM you said:
"Hello Brian, yeah, as far as I am aware (Just checked this with Sam). We've actually made it to work already on Joomla 1.7 just that we also need to make it compatible with Joomla 1.5 (again)"
I'd rather you say no now than wait another three months.

Hello Chad,
I am sorry for the delay of this reply. I am sorry but unfortunately SectionEx is not compatible with Joomla 2.5 yet
We've actually been working on that for quite sometime but the problem is that Sections are removed altogether in Joomla 2.5, and we're actually trying to substitute Sections with Category and to make things worst, we need to have backwards compatibility with Joomla 1.5 as well
We're still considering on whether or not to push the updates for Joomla 2.5
