Hello,

yesterday I had a mail from my hosting company (SiteGround, GoGeek plan) :

We have detected that the http://website.net Joomla application hosted on your account has been attacked by spam bots.
This has resulted in excessive activity of your application and constant high server load. To protect the server performance and the customers' websites hosted on this server, we had to disable web access to the application causing the high load. This means that this application will not be accessible until the problem is resolved.

So my website was offline for almost 2 hours.

To solve the problem, I've check my Raw Access Log.
So I downloaded a file with more than 140 000 lines. On this file, more that 100 000 lines was about Komento.
So I turned off Komento and this solved the problem.

I like to use this extension, but it cause a problem.
Is this problem come from my website, or it's come from your extension?

Thanks for your help.
Hello Simon,

Sorry for late reply to this,
Can we have your Joomla backend and Cpanel access so we can help you check on this as well?
Also may i know how to view your server performance result if I trying to enable the Komento extension from your backend? So we can try do some debugging and see which part causing in your site getting high performance. Please advise.

Hello,

to be honest with you, I'm not that it's a good idea the enable Komento again

I'll join you the log about Komento, maybe it can helps you?

If not, and if there is no choice, I'll give you an access to enable Komento and an access to see what append in the CPanel.

Thanks for your help!

Hello Simon,

I am really sorry for the delay of this reply as it is a weekend for us here.
May i know do you have setup the cronjob in your Komento extension? Because I noticed you have turn on this feature Send mail on page load, this feature mean that, when the user access in your page, it will process the email notification to sent out to your user.

If you have configure the cronjob, the cronjob will process every 10 minute if you set the time interval to 10 minute from your cronjob.
If you haven't setup the cronjob in your site, can we try this way and see is it will reduce the server performance percentage?
Also, can you provide us with your Cpanel access as well? Please advise.

No, I don't have setup any cronjob.

Hi Arlex, thanks for the cronjob, but do you think that is going to solve the problem?

I've talk about this problem with one of my friend using Komento. He tried to answer this post but he can't. Below, you'll find his answer:

Hi Arlex,

Simon is a friend of mine. I've just made the same check on my site. My Apache log file for a given period has 335.180 lines (requests) and 137.272 (i.e. 41%) contains the word "komento".

It's a very huge number : 41% of the total requests to my site during that period was made by Komento (GET for ressources like css, js, png, ... files or POST method to retrieve the list of comments for the displayed article).

I use Komento only for com_content and for a specify category (blog) on my site.

Just like Simon, I can give you an Excel sheet with the list of requests and their "hits" but this list will be, in fact, almost the same that Simon's one.

If I can suggest something : why not using a CSS sprite to couple all of your small png files ?

This morning I was searching for a workaround like "Click here to show comments" i.e. not automatically show (=call) Komento but just add a link at the end of my article. "Do you want to show or post new comment? Click here". Then, only at that moment, the Komento part will be displayed. But, perhaps, not a good idea in term of SEO's perspectives.

Best Regards

Thanks for your help.

Hello Simon,

I'm really sorry that delayed of this reply,
Thanks for your suggestion, i will consult with our developer regarding this.

By the way, I have checked with you provided that error log, it seems like that is not enough for us to investigate on this server performance issues.
Is it possible provide us with some relevant log that indicate the performance issue caused by Komento? Perhaps provide us with your server log file and your Apache log file for a given period has 335.180 lines (requests) and 137.272 (i.e. 41%) contains the word "komento". as well?

So we can try to investigate on this issues. Please advise.
