Just upgraded to v1.3.4 and noticing that Users (not Site Admin) can now search for Invite Only Groups returned in search result, not only that, also fields that are set to Only Me Privacy. Is this a new major change to Privacy behavior? I thought in Groups only Open and Closed groups are searchable and can be seen by regular users in list view. And for Search, it will check for field Privacy settings first.

Hi Jackson,

I am sorry for the delay of this reply.

Regarding your issue, we recently changed the behaviour of the toolbar search where, the search will first return you the keywords that matched your input, and you will need to select the one of the keyword to perform the actual search. However, it seems like a lot of people mis-understand this and think the keywords suggestion are the actual results. Another thing is, when suggesting the keywords, there is no privacy checking. Joomla smart search will just return any keywords that match your input irregardless the access level.

Anyway, I've discussed with the team and we decided to revert the toolbar search behaviour back to 1.2.x search behaviour. Meaning to say, we will not show the keywords suggestion anymore, we will instead to perform the actual search. The disadvantage of this is that, the loose search might not working properly as Joomla smart search do not search for loose keywords ( wildcard search ).

And for the field privacy, currently we cannot tie the field privacy during the search with toolbar search simply because we do not have control how Joomla smart search perform the search. What we can do is, during the user indexing, we will check if the content from the field is viewable or not. E.g. the email field, if user set the email field to 'only me', then when the user finder plugin attempt to index the data for this user, the plugin will not include the email.

Hope the above make more sense for the toolbar search and the above mention changes will be available on the next coming release of EasySocial.

Hope this help and have a nice day

Hi Sam,

Sounds like a good plan to me and thank you for hearing me out on this. It's just doesn't make sense to set all those Privacy settings then Search doesn't care what the Privacy setting is.

Since Beta all I look at ES is more on config flexibility, functionality, and security... of course bugs I don't care much about fancy staff it can do since I trust you guys will definitely incorporate it eventually but I know that Security in social application can be easily neglected by any developer. If I may suggest, your team should have a group of developer tasked to look at security/privacy and any new planned features or modifications should ask the security/privacy team how are we going to integrate things. That would also save your team a lot of time.

For me, the Privacy setting is one, if not the most important feature in Easy Social that make or would make people jump to ES from JomSocial.

Thank you again for hearing us out, please extend my thanks to Mark and your team.

Hi Mark & Sam,

Well, like I said the new search behavior you guys added is great. If you can make a way and make it as an option for Site Admins to choose what Group or Profile can take advantage of that, I can use that actually. I hate to see you ditch hours of hard work on code

Just an idea, maybe you can easily incorporate that into the Search Module... for now, maybe? Of course with a control of what type of users gets to use it (please).

Thanks,

Jackson

The new search seems to cause a lot of confusions and we have decided to switch this back to the way it worked before until we find a better solution for this.
