"The h1 is the most important tag and it should never be skipped on a page. Search spiders pay attention to the words used in the h1 tag as it should contain a basic description of the page content, just as the page title does". - Woorank

As of right now profiles/groups/events all use H2 for the page titles. Ideally, they should be using H1 titles. This signifies to the search engines that this is the main theme of the page. Use CSS to make the H1 tag the same as the H2 tag so that way we maintain the same styling. I've checked many other sources to confirm this.
Most 3rd party template uses h1 and it would be a no brainer if the extension also uses H1 tags. This would cause redundant h1 tags on the page.

"With the advent of HTML5 the answer to this question has significantly changed in both SEO and technical regards. It's now not only possible to have multiple <h1> level headings per webpage that will make sense to search engines, but in most cases it's actually the recommended course". - An in depth article on H1 tags

Obviously the usage of H1 tag placement is still relevant. I'm curious where these third party templates insert H1 tags. I searched my entire profile using control F for H1 tags which non could be found. ES does not use H1 tags so as far as I know this is not a no brainer.

Hello Josh,

We have enough experience dealing with the removal of h1 tags in our extensions because 3rd party templates has their own h1 tags. Hence, we have decided to not use h1 tags.
