Hi -

Is there a way of directly viewing/editing the introtext of blog articles in Easyblog 5 ? It would be ideal if it would be possible to edit this (maybe in the sidebar) alongside the full article.

The automated solution always draws in content that appears first in the article, but is not what I want for the intro.

Thanks,

Robin
Hello Robin,

The best way to define your own introtext when you post a blog post is to use the "read more" block (If you are using the new composer editor) or "read more button" (If you are using TINYMCE, JCE etc)

That doesn't really solve the issue at all for existing posts. Is there a way to directly edit the introtext without altering the original post ?

Very disappointed that none of this is mentioned in the documentation. At the moment, its making me wish I hadn't upgraded ....

Hi.
I too am a little confused about this... When I create a post using the built in composer, in a category view it shows the full text (e.g. https://it-advice.guru/how-to/blogs/categories/general-it-tech). However, in the settings, I've told EB5 to truncate after 1 paragaph (using the <p> tag), but this is not happening. Are you saying Mark that when composing a blog using EB5's composer, this is effectively ignored and we now need to use the readmore block to achieve the same desired effect?
I also notice that when the post is sent to ES stream, the whole post is being sent, and not just the number of paragraphs I've specified. If this limit is controlled by the ES App for EB however, then this too isn't working, as I've set it to 250 chars and the whole post is still showing.
Cheers.
Dave

Hey guys,

I am actually a little lost here. When you mean directly "editing" the introtext, what do you actually mean? This isn't possible with EasyBlog 3.9 either.

Hi Mark...
Under Settings->Layout->Truncation ...
There are 2 sections, "Automated Truncation (Composer Posts)" and "Automated Truncation (Normal Posts)". In EB 3.9, the setting under "Truncation type" if set as "By paragraph <p>" and the "Number of paragraphs" would dictate how much intro text would be shown in such areas as the category layout. This setting now, however, seems to have no effect. For example, in the URL I gave above, I can see the entire post on the category page, and it is not using the <p> tag to truncate.
I assume, therefore, we now need to use the Readmore block and use the "Automated Truncation (Composer Posts)" to have the same desired effect?
However, how does this work with the EB Blog App in ES? It seems that is ignoring all settings and just posting the entire blog entry on the stream!
Oh, and as a heads-up - if you schedule an EB post for a later date/time, it never appears on the ES stream when it becomes published, nor does it get autoposted to Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.

I mean truely editing the introtext, so that you have precise control over what is displayed in modules. Editors, authors, academics, etc always want full control over abstracts.

Actually you can in 3.9 using 3rd party extensions like Roksprocket. And its really important to have this sort of control for increasing pageviews and SEO.

Using line breaks and paragraphs aren't a viable solution, since that actually changes the way the article content is displayed. For abstracts, the text often needs to be modified to ensure the right context, given fewer characters. Automated introtext for press releases, which often begin with date, location, and source, become totally useless.

Very strange that this sort of feature has not been considered with EB 5, since it is omnipresent on every major blogging platform (even, gulp, wordpress). Actually, sort of shocked that there is no native ability to do this in EB 5.

Apologies for the tone, but really, really annoyed to have discovered this post-upgrade.

Hello Robin,

The only way to ensure that selective text is used in modules / plugins is to ensure that you split your contents accordingly. This is through the read more block / read more button. I am not sure how is this done in RokSprocket but in EasyBlog 3.9, the only way to do this is to use the read more button too.

If no read more is present, and you want automation, the automated truncation that is pointed out by Dave is there to automatically truncate the text at specific length but I don't think this is what you are going after too?

Anyway, Rockettheme has already sent us a copy of their module which works with EasyBlog 5 and we're providing them with some feedback to fix these issues with EasyBlog 5. As soon as all of these issues are sorted out, you can continue to use RokSprocket with EasyBlog

Hello Dave,

I think what you are posting here is completely different as to what Robin is posting here. The settings you are referring to here is the automated truncation whereas what Robin is pointing out here is to explicitly set the introtext.

The text truncation settings is only applicable to legacy posts (WYSIWYG editors) and the block truncation is applied on the new composer. The truncation by blocks on the other hand will truncate the content by blocks and that would give you a better layout when it comes to automated truncation rather than cutting text by characters.

Hi Mark.
Ok... I see now... I think perhaps the settings need to be made clearer then. By which I mean that the truncation settings and the "normal posts" options need to clearly state that these settings won't work if using the built in EB composer.
As for the other issues I mentioned, should I create a new thread?
