downloaded new version, used my api key and it still says needs updating in the backend.

In order for you to get the correct latest version you have to put your API key at Backend>Components>EasyBlog>Settings>Systems as shown http://prntscr.com/cbx6qz. I have helped you put your API key and it shown correct version already as shown http://prntscr.com/cbx6yd. Hope this help
