hi SI team

I am just guessing but I think this is some kind of Java problem similar to what happened in the back end the last couple of times!

http://stackideas.com/forums/my-upgrade-button-has-disappeared-in-backend
http://stackideas.com/forums/accessing-setting-for-themes-in-es-v1-3-10

This time around I am in the front end. To the right of the main menu there is the little login box. It used to be the case that when I rolled over the full login box would pop down. This is since my last update no longer the case. Currently bang up to date. If I login by going here:
http://finalbug.net/synergise
The other menu points notifications etc also do not drop down.

thanks

Paul
Hello Paul,

We can't really do anything about this because we can't control how Akeeba is playing around with the installation completed messages. We needed a proper screen which would look elegant upon your initial installation

Hello Paul,

I believe the problem is because your upgrade wasn't successful and I believe the reason is because the installation complete message did not appear if you install it via Extensions Manager (This is probably caused by Akeebabackup) .

By default, the installation complete message should look like this http://screen.stackideas.com/2014-11-29_1516.png . However, on your site, for some reasons upon completing the installation this is what you will see http://screen.stackideas.com/2014-11-29_1517.png . So it gives you the impression that the update is completed but it is actually not completed since you need to click on the "Proceed with installation" button.

I am not really sure what does Akeeba do to the installation complete message, after uploading the launcher, I manually proceed to the update extensions page at http://finalbug.net/administrator/index.php?option=com_easysocial&install=true and proceeded with the installation process. It works fine now.

This also explains why those .js files are missing for you and it wasn't missing for us because we manually accessed the URL to proceed with the update after uploading the launcher.

I've been considering using "Akeebabackup" but am wondering otherwise based on what I see here. Mark do you have any recommendations for backups? I suppose I could see how it goes and work around things as they come. For now I'll debate what the best method is for backups.

Hello Josh,

It depends on what you want to backup to be honest. If you are just wanting to backup files and database, you could use the s3cmd to upload your backups on Amazon S3

Yes, I'm wanting to backup all Joomla's folders and the database. I'm not too worried about storage (it does matter of course), but I am however concerned with the backup system itself to make sure it:

1) does the basic job (saves database and files per day or week)

2) does not hurt performance much (speed and conflicts)

I know number 2 is trickier, and of course I'm willing to put up with some difficulties. The Amazon S3 seems like a decent storage option.

Hi Mark

If I am not mistaken the same thing has happened almost 3 times in a row. i.e. 3 from the last 4 updates. Arlex did one for me that worked!

I am instructed in the backend that my ES version is outdated.

a) Although I have automated Akeeba backups running (daily/Remote Amazon S3). I do a manual one any way localy. Just in case.

b) I proceed with the automated update and am told that there has been a problem and that I should download and install manual using the extensions manager! Which I do.

c) This technical works but as we know there seem to be Java files that go missing!

Mark

I hade a different experience to what you describe!!!

I am 100% certain that I saw that first screen shot that you posted above after doing the manual install!!! I read it and then did nothing as I was terified of overwritting everything with a fresh ES install!!!

What is the solution? Is there any thing in my work-flow that could be causing this? I can not ask you guys to fix this for me after every update? There must be a better way right? I would hate to have to find an another alternative to Akeeba. I love those guys!!! I have an Akeeba paid current subscription so if I know what to ask them I can ask them something.

Best

Paul

@ Josh. I guess that you are technical light years ahead of me. So your solutions are probably better. But for the record the guy who runs Akeeba is nothing short of a Joomla Saint/Legend. I had him help me rescue a website whilst he was switching planes at an airport and I was not even a paid subscriber at the time!!! I am indebted to the man for the rest of my life!!!

Thanks Paul. Typically I create manual back ups every now and then. However as I gain a community the possibility of getting hacked or some other big issue becomes much more likely which is why I'll need it more than once in a while. I've heard good things about Akeeba. I suppose I could experiment with them and ES too considering that I am interested in a backup system and might be able to help with this mystery. I admit that I do have fun solving website mysteries. I'll have to report back in a few days based on what I discover.

There's nothing wrong here with EasySocial at all and the problem is because of the misleading message here, http://screen.stackideas.com/2014-11-29_1517.png . The success install page should look like this instead, http://screen.stackideas.com/2014-11-29_1516.png

Whenever you upload the launcher and only see the single message, you need to manually invoke the installation process by accessing http://finalbug.net/administrator/index.php?option=com_easysocial&install=true

That's it. This will solve all your issues with the js files being missing.

Hi Mark

Frankly I am still confused!
When I installed/uploaded the launcher... I saw this here
http://screen.stackideas.com/2014-11-29_1516.png
Does this mean that I now click the this link?

http://finalbug.net/administrator/index.php?option=com_easysocial&install=true

sorry to be so paranoid

best

Paul

Josh, if you mail me at paul(at)paurray.de I can give you login details for my Site and you can look at how I have Akeeba set up. It took me about 6 hours to get the backups going to Amazon. For me the hardest part was the horrible Amazon interface. In all fairness Eileen turned me on this this somewhere in a thread that I can no longer find. She suggested a work flow where you have 5GB free space at Amazon and then get Akeeba save the files remotely at Amazon and then have Akeeba delete old stuff before you hit the 5GB barrier!

@Paul I see from the image above that you're on Akeeba Backup Professional running their "enhanced" installer which replaces Joomla's standard installer in order to provide "System Restore Points" and you'll find a so-named published plugin in your back-end. You could disable that for now just unpublish the plugin or click on the "Back to regular installer" link on the bottom of the extension installer page to deactivate the System Restore Points temporarily. as illustrated as show in this image http://www.screencast.com/t/Uio6efWKuW When disabled you'll be using the regular ol' fashioned Joomla installer and restore points will not be set as you install extensions.

It's a possibility that the naming convention used in the ES installation is not fully supported by the Akeeba enhanced installer. If that's implicated in the problems, it's possible that SI could provide a System Restore Point definition in the XML manifest.

As a side note, I don't use the enhanced installer because it interferes with my workflow and I don't install extensions often enough to benefit over my steps to test new extensions in my staging area first and also take frequent backups.

@Josh I'm a happy user of Akeeba and second Pauls opinion and I also have backups auto archived to Amazon storage. Restore is easy and all I need to do is select the desired package from the archived backups at Amazon and I have an updated staging site or restored live site.

Hi Mark

I plucked up the courage and clicked the link you posted above and every thing seems to be cool again. My drop down menus are back. Hurrah. Thanks!

And yes I understand with some help from Eileen what is going on. I have this fancy back up system with points that helps me break my back up into smaller incremental portions e.g. for updates of individual components etc.

By the way, in my innocence this Back up points system seems to be a seriously cool idea.

For the moment I have gone back to the old fashioned Joomla component installation.

But seriously would it not be an idea if ES played with Akeeba (Pro) out of the box. I think it is reasonable to say that pretty much any list of top 10 Joomla components will include Akeeba back up. OK I have no idea how many people in here are using the pro version. There are as of now at least 2 of us. Who know maybe more...

I have a feeling that is what Eileen is also saying

It's a possibility that the naming convention used in the ES installation is not fully supported by the Akeeba enhanced installer. If that's implicated in the problems, it's possible that SI could provide a System Restore Point definition in the XML manifest.

@ Eileen thanks for jumping in here again
FYI I have HWDshare installed and have been playing with it.
So far I find it pretty impressive and will update more when I know more

Hey Paul,

No problem, coincidentally I had just been looking at that area when I saw your post and thought it could potentially be relevant. I'll look out for your further info on HWDshare --- meanwhile I'm trying to keep pecking at my "todos" as well!
