Hey Denis,

Have a look here also: stackideas.com/forums/i-want-categories-to-show-on-subcategories

We have it halfway working on our website, http://www.spiderbot.eu/forum

If you want I can share the two files that are used for this (toolbar.php and frontpage.category.php) with you. Due note that it is not supported by StackIdeas!

Hi Denis,

See attached.

I don't know your php skills but if you find some way to improve it, please share them back.

Current issues:

- Sub categories do not show up in topics (because these are in the category file that is not loaded on these pages).
- Sub categories sort alphabetically differently depending if you are on the front page or the sub category itself.

See attached. If you want we can brainstorm on it and improve it, haha.

To be fair, the credit for making it go to Mark Lee and Adelene, they did most of the work, I just tweaked it and altered the styling.

I read in another thread that this will be available in 3.2. Is that correct?

I will keep my fingers crossed.

Any idea of when 3.2 might be released?

Hello Adam,

Sorry for the late reply. It will be quite soon, but we after some review with Mark we might not be implementing this after all There will be a lot of issues when the categories are 3 tiered (or more) and there just a lot of things to take into account. The bad news is it might not make it for 3.2 as we are rushing this for EasySocial integrations. I'm sorry to disappoint you here

Thanks!

Sorry to hear that.

I have noticed that there are multiple people who are interested in this feature, is there a convenient way we could collectively put some money in and have it custom made?

Adelene

Could you please clarify something...

Are you saying that it won't be implemented, or simply that it won't be ready for 3.2?

Hello Philippe and Adam,

Yes there are quite a few people asking for this. However this issue is still an ongoing discussion on whether to implement it or not so I can't give a solid answer now. I will broach this subject again on our weekly meeting and we'll see how this goes.

Thanks!

I'd like to see this as well. It's a UX issue really - users need to be able to navigate the discussion structure quickly and intuitively. And, one layer of subcategory is better than none...

Hello All,

yes, I think too that two-layers toolbar is enough. This is best value for users.

I agree with the comments from Denis and John If 3+ tiers is the complication, then please just cater for 2 tiers. This meets my needs, and I expect it would meet the needs of the majority of sites.

Will those .php modifications work in EasyDiscuss 4?

I am a "little-knowledge-is-a-dangerous-thing" kind of guy.

I can open up a .php file and append lines and then save it again . . . but is that how to make the toolbox and front page modifications work? If so, which .php file? (at this point, you might caution me against messing up things when I don't really know what I'm doing.)

Hey Joel,

Unfortunately this wouldn't work in EasyDiscuss 4 as these hacks are for EasyDiscuss 3.x
