Hi,

I was wondering if there is any option to automatically add users to a specific group based on their location (either geolocation or info in profile type), is that somehow possible?

best,
jakob
If I recall correctly such a function is not available. However I believe the hooks are available within the API to have a plugin made to do this. Your idea can be submitted to http://stackideas.com/voices as a feature request, sent as a ticket via http://crm.stackideas.com to be considered for paid development, or outsourced for development on a website like http://www.joomlancers.com/.

If this IS a feature, ignore me. *laughs* I'm simply not aware of it.

Hello Guys,

Currently it is not possible to do so with the current system of easysocial. However like David suggested, you can always post your idea in our voices page so that other people can vote it as well.

Thank you everybody for your responses - I just submitted the idea for paid development.

@jan: would you be interested in sharing the cost for the development, it looks like we are searching for the same solution.
just contact me via jakob@innerwise.com

@Jacob why not
i need a feature to autojoin groups based on custom field choice
for ex. if a member tape windows 7 in the OS custom field he will join the windows 7 group !
same thing for location field, if he is based in NY he will join the NY group !

Hi Jan,

here is the answer from stackideas dev:

Hm, this app actually requires quite a bit of man hours and I would think that the app development itself would cost somewhere between $800 - $1200 considering the time needed to develop this custom field app. However, I wouldn't mind splitting the cost by half

Funding the app basically means that we will release this as an app on the Apps Store at http://stackides.com/apps Unfortunately this app would solely be limited / restricted to the address custom field since this app will need to read the location of the user and assign them to the respective groups.

As for the auto join groups, unfortunately this would require a separate app altogether but I don't think this would be as difficult as the location one.

So this price would only be for the geolocation auto add and the other custom field actually require another plugin.

But I am still talking to devs on joomlancer, will keep you in the loop

Hi Jakob, Hi Jan

Your idea is really cool :-)
Straight off I have to say that in terms of budget I have as of now no budget.
But this can/might change.

thinking aloud here:

LOCATION

The location thing is not so interesting for me in its current form but here is a mad idea.
Have infinite (dynamic) local networks.
e.g. depending on your location (I am in Berlin) then I find people within for e.g. 100KM in my area who have skills XYZ)
If I am in Kansas City then I find people within for e.g. 100KM in my area who have skills XYZ)

Here is a thread of mine:

http://stackideas.com/forums/advanced-search-to-search-distance

Maybe this is way off but I could use Search functions to search for people in Berlin or Kansas for e.g.
And save these search functions.
If I had a way in the front end/back end to then add these people to a group why would I need an App?

PROFILE/SKILLS

Auto add people groups is a cool idea. :-)
In my case my users have profiles with skills set. e.g. Photoshop, Final Cut Pro etc
I have way to many skills and not enough members so as of now I would also want to have sleeping groups so to speak.
e.g. have people put in a group “Nuke Studio” and when the number of people reach a critical mass activate it.

I wonder if this would not be easier to implement with some TURBO search functions!?!

a) Search for something Location/Profile skill/attribute
b) Clicking on people in a list and then clicking add to a group that I had created in advance such as “Nuke Studio”

The last part of this idea would of course be a job for the SI team.
i.e. a function to add people from a search list front/back end to group XYZ

c) Somehow automate this so it happens automatically and now I am way out of my depth

Just thinking aloud here. ***And I am NOT a web developer*** just a video editor who has fallen into a parallel universe!

End of uninformed rant

Best

Paul

Thanks guys,

i think its not easy to implement,
any way the app will be based on custom field value (members choices), if member choose Photoshop in Softwares field then he will be add to the photoshop users group or get invite for example !

Hey guys,

Just re-visiting this thread. The idea is actually pretty simple and it is definitely do-able. The most difficult part is thinking of the UI on how one can add these "rules".

Hi Mark,

thank you for following up on this thread (too many other things on my head so I didn't pursue this any further so far).
I would love to see this feature come true and am more than willing to test in case you should need someone

Couldn't the UI simply be made possible via single lines with dropdowns à la
IF [Dropdown - Custom Field] has the value [Text], then [Dropdown - Add or Remove] the user from group [Dropdown - List of groups]

??
