are ES usernames supposed to allow spaces in them?

I noticed that a few of my EasySocial users have a username with spaces in them. Is that supposed to work that way? I am used to sites not allowing username with spaces in them. I wonder if maybe that happens when we allow the email address to be used as the username?
EasySocial used to now allow username spaces, but eventually Joomla changed their standards and so did ES.

Hello Sean,

Yes, Joomla actually allows "spaces" in their username and our custom field simply mimics the behavior of Joomla's username
