I would like to add an address field to a group, and then have users search by location to find nearby groups. I have seen some forum discussions on this subject, but nothing concrete. Can I make it work?

Yes, the address custom field already available in Easysocial group, but unfortunately we do not have group address search feature in current system. You can always request this feature from our voice page http://stackideas.com/voices/easysocial .
