Have a 500 error upon installation on the site part, can you guys help me?
Hello Ken,

Sorry for late reply to this,
I have tried to update EasySocial in your site, it seems like hitting this error ( http://screencast.com/t/Im7x8FEhh )

Error
An error has occurred.
-1 Copy file failed

Which means that when you process the installation that moment, the installer file unable to copy over in your file, so hitting this issues.
is it possible consult with your Webhosting provider regarding this file permission issues and see how it goes?

If everyone is having the same problem, then the stack team is probably screwing around with there servers, I guess

I just wish they have a smaller update, looking that the version is just less than 50 files to lessen the time of uploading/downloading (updating for the next build only, not applicable as a full update).

I think a few quick fix issues came to light yesterday, so I'm just patiently waiting on 1.3.4 anyhow

If your server settings allow for it, just download the full version instead of just the launcher... and do a full manual install. Maybe that helps?

Hi There Jannik

Tried all the 3 packages, same errors on the 3. Did try to manually update, breaks my save search function. 3 times I did restore yesterday. Good thing there's akeeba.

Have you added any extensions or done anything since your 1.3.2 install?

Most of them are custom codes but just pulling some classes in easysocial. And some modification in the css. But then again, the normal upgrade/install should just overwrite it and not have 500 error.

I also tried chmod -R 777 everything just to upload it successfully but avail no luck.

Take your site back to the 1.3.2 install date, install 1.3.3 and go from there or go to extensions/manage/easysocial and uninstall 1.3.2 completely, purge cache, log out, log back in and install 1.3.3..... you made an error somewhere tweaking that stuff

Hi Arlex,

thanks for the support! Basically I succeeded after so much panic seeing the site was gone. Your error gave me a clue too (just 500 error on json is quite hard to debug, atleast you gave me the idea it's a file who's stopping the process) on how to fix it. It was a misconfiguration on the chown. Thanks guys! You're the best!

We need to be able to upload the entire ES packages with the default Joomla! Extension manager, simple as that - No quick launch and no manual stuff

What's in my mind is to make it a smaller package. 14MB is really big as an update/patch for less than 100 files updated. Anyway, just my 2 cents

The quick launcher is good for a ES first time user or someone who just started out using Joomla! and don't have a clue.... There's nothing I don't like about ES except this - The Language file is 8000 forever lines and everytime I have to upgrade it takes me 5 days nonstop to change everything I need to change in that file and I hate it

Same here, updating is quite a burden for us who modifies the site. I myself create some over rides on the template itself and some files and every time time I update I have to manually modify everything (even if it not really affected in the changelogs). Anyway, seems like it will always like be to us unless stackideas take a step for this to make it easier for us

I'm glad it's not just me seeing things this way. I mean you don't know what they change, add, or take away from the file. You try to take your modified file and add it to the new upgraded file it breaks functionality everytime. You can try it on your server, ftp, manually and even change the file in the launcher before you upload the launcher, still breaks functionality everytime. Say you have a big site with a lot of users and you modified the site before the upgrade, your screwed.

Actually, that's the reason why I'm opting in to Amazon S3 as a storage since everytime I restore using akeeba, all the images uploaded are gone and it's quite a task to restore every folders from the old one. I did try to manually update but I usually ends up breaking lots of functions too like yesterday (I break the save function in hashtag search).

So we've got three options. Either we stick with one version of ES and don't upgrade, they give us an advanced section stamped with a warning in the backend to be able to modify the .CSS and EN, or we need to be able to use the default Joomla! Extension Manager. Unless there's an easier way?

I guess it depends on what changes you guys are making. If you are modifying the theme files, it should strictly be done via template overrides and not modifying the existing theme files because that would be suicidal when you update.

Okay @Ken I just actually tested this one. This is accurate info. I don't know what system you use, but I use Ubuntu. Whatever system you use you should be able to find a tool like this, keyword "File Comparison Merging Tool"..... This tool that I found is "Diffuse Merge Tool" for Ubuntu - Screenshot below. It shows you the difference in the files and merges them together causing no error. Takes 30 seconds to complete this operation, then load with FTP. This is why I Love Ubuntu
